Long bio

Adele was born in North Yorkshire and always dreamed of being a writer. My first novel - Playing Away - was published in 2000 and since then published twenty-three bestselling novels in twenty-three years, including the number one bestsellers Lies Lies Lies and Just My Luck.

Over 5 million copies of her English editions have been sold and translated into 31 different languages. She has written twenty one contemporary novels and two historical ones, Spare Brides and If You Go Away, set during and after the First World War. All her novels examines issues that are important to us all. She likes to scrutinize our concepts of family, our theories on love, parenting and fidelity with  honesty and humour. Whatever period she sets her novels they are known for examining the thorny issues of the lives people lead with her trademark, up-front, tell-it-as-it-is style.

She writes numerous articles and short stories for national magazines and newspapers and often appears on radio and TV talking about her work and related matters. As she says, ‘basically a talking head. This works well for me as I'm very chatty and opinionated. I think it's true to say once I get going, it’s quite hard to shut me up.’

She passionately believes that reading is a basic right. She is a proud Ambassador for the National Literacy Trust and The Reading Agency: two charities that promote literacy in the UK. She is a judge for the Costa Book Awards and The British Book Awards which she views as a great privilege and an amazing experience.

She was proud to be awarded honorary doctorates of Letters from the University of Leicester in 2023 and Teesside University in 2009. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave Adele the honour of M.B.E for Services to Literature in the New Year Honours List 2022 which was presented to her by His Majesty King Charles III.

During her career she has lived in Italy, Botswana and London. Now living happily in Guildford, Surrey with my husband and son. I guess, that's it, so far...
